Diverse Dinosaur Movies Compete at Box Office
Two distinct dinosaur-themed movies captured attention at the North American box office over the weekend, though neither dislodged “Spider-Man” from its top position nor overtook “The Odyssey” for second place. “Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie” and “The End of Oak Street” vied for third, each targeting different audiences.
Studio estimates on Sunday showed that “The End of Oak Street,” starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, edged ahead slightly with $21 million, compared to the animated “Paw Patrol” which took in $20.5 million. Both films had to compete against “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which continues its successful run by adding another $70 million, bringing its North American total to $785.8 million. This success makes it the fourth-largest domestic release of all time, with a global tally of over $2 billion, a mark achieved by only eight movies.
Meanwhile, “The Odyssey” maintained its strong performance, remaining in second place with $23.2 million, pushing its domestic total to $504.7 million. With international earnings of $98 million, including $36.6 million from China, this movie has grossed over $1.2 billion globally.
“The End of Oak Street,” an original PG-13 action film, exceeded expectations with $21 million from 3,446 locations in North America and $26 million internationally, totaling a $47 million global debut. Directed by David Robert Mitchell, this movie features McGregor and Hathaway as suburban parents whose neighborhood shifts to prehistoric times. Critics responded positively, giving it an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, though audiences rated it a B CinemaScore.
For family audiences, “Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie” attracted attention with its PG rating. Released by Paramount Pictures in 3,545 theaters, the third installment of the Paw Patrol series since 2021 received an A CinemaScore and accumulated a $69 million global total.
The documentary “Katseye: Wild Hearts” completed the top five with $4 million from 724 screens. Other new entries in the top 10 included “Six: The Musical Live” at sixth place with $3 million and the Tamil-language “Vishwanath & Sons” in tenth place with $1.6 million.
Outside the top 10, “The Rivals of Amziah King,” featuring Matthew McConaughey, made over $1 million from 632 theaters. The biopic “Tony” earned $706,676 from 37 theaters in its second week, with plans for wider release.
The box office tally for the summer reached $4.2 billion, surpassing pre-pandemic summer 2019 by 5.7%. While it may not exceed the record $4.33 billion summer of 2013, movie industry analyst Paul Dergarabedian regards it as one of the top five summers ever.
