The debate over which city boasts the most passionate sports fans is longstanding. In the NFL, certain cities stand out for their fervent support. Philadelphia Eagles fans, for instance, are famously dedicated, while New York and Boston reflect a strong dedication to sports, typical of East Coast cities.
Chicago Bears fans are another example, known for filling Soldier Field in cold weather despite the team’s struggles. In the South, particularly Texas, football holds immense importance. High school games often occur in stadiums seating over 20,000 people.
Buffalo Bills fans face obstructed views at the new $2.2 billion Highmark Stadium, highlighting the challenges even enthusiastic fanbases encounter.
Nielsen, recognized for TV ratings, has tried to quantify fan passion through its “Local NFL fandom index” report. This report ranks all 30 NFL markets using eight metrics to determine fan investment: apparel purchases, general interest, event attendance, betting interest, social media engagement, radio listenership, streaming, and TV viewership. Although not all metrics are clearly defined or weighted, the focus is on smaller markets where fans show higher engagement.
According to Nielsen, the top cities for NFL fandom are:
- Buffalo
- Kansas City
- Green Bay / Appleton
- Cincinnati
- Philadelphia
Smaller markets perform well because they typically face less competition for entertainment, especially in colder months. In cities like Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, the local NFL team’s prominence drives media consumption and game attendance. For instance, Cincinnati and Green Bay rank high in merchandise sales fueled by team success.
Conversely, larger markets, often with diverse populations, do not rank as highly. Teams in Miami, LA, San Francisco, Tampa, and New York compete with numerous entertainment options and sports teams. Nonetheless, Philadelphia Eagles fans earn recognition for ranking fifth despite the large market challenges.
Nielsen’s report also underscores the impact of winning on fan engagement. Boston, buoyed by the Patriots’ success, retains its position. Similarly, Kansas City benefits from consistent performances by the Chiefs. Buffalo, although lacking a Super Bowl victory, leads the index due to its strong playoff appearances.
Overall, Buffalo Bills fans can now claim the title of the NFL’s best fanbase, supported by data, even if a Super Bowl win remains elusive.
