LSU head coach Lane Kiffin left Ole Miss to pursue a championship dynasty with the Tigers. He led the Rebels to the College Football Playoff last season but departed before coaching in the tournament. Despite receiving similar offers from Florida and Ole Miss, Kiffin saw LSU as the best opportunity to win multiple national titles. The university has significant resources to support competitive teams.
Discussing his decision, Kiffin emphasized that financial incentives are now a significant motivator for student-athletes. Unlike the past, where players received scholarships, modern athletes compete for contracts based on performance.
We’ve evolved in that, in how we talk. They make a lot of money, a lot of them now. So, to me, there’s a little bit of a difference in there. If you get what part of your motivation was, are you still motivated? We work through that in the way that we talk to them, the things that we point to.
Kiffin acknowledged the challenges of this financial dynamic but also noted its benefits. Players now view college football as a serious job rather than a part-time activity alongside their studies.
He pointed out that players recognize the gravity of their performance. Poor play might mean not being retained, whereas success could lead to further financial rewards.
I think they do take it more serious that way and realize, ‘Hey, if I don’t play well, I’m probably not going to make that next year. And if I play well, I’m going to make more versus I just have the same scholarship.’ Kind of just how a lot of humans work, if you think about it.
The potential for increased earnings keeps players focused. Although some fans worry that initial financial success could decrease motivation, players know ongoing success is necessary for future rewards.
