In a recent development, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham was involved in an incident where he exchanged messages with someone impersonating a senior official from the United States. The impersonator pretended to be Susie Wiles, the White House Chief of Staff under President Donald Trump.
A spokesperson for Prime Minister Burnham refused to comment, citing protocol on national security matters. Initially reported by Politico, unnamed officials revealed that Burnham believed he was communicating with Wiles before suspecting the deception and ending the conversation.
The White House clarified that the incident did not result from any security breach involving Wiles’ devices. Past investigations by the U.S. government uncovered attempts where prominent figures, including elected officials and business leaders, received messages from others posing as Wiles.
Within those incidents, the State Department alerted U.S. diplomats about the risks of impersonation attempts targeting Secretary of State Marco Rubio and potentially other officials through artificial intelligence. This warning followed attempts by impostors to contact several high-level individuals, including foreign ministers, a U.S. senator, and a governor.
The FBI has raised concerns about malicious actors leveraging AI technology to mimic government officials, further stressing the security risks.
Having assumed office less than a month ago, Prime Minister Burnham has aimed to establish strong ties with the White House. Previously, Trump had a positive relationship with Burnham’s predecessor, Keir Starmer, but their relationship later cooled.
