Human Remains Found Near Tucson, Arizona: No Connection to Guthrie Case
Authorities discovered human remains about 15 miles from Nancy Guthrie’s home near Tucson, Arizona. This finding led to online speculation about a possible link to Guthrie’s disappearance six months ago. However, authorities stated there is no evidence currently suggesting a connection to the Guthrie investigation.
Investigators have determined that time-of-death markers show the remains had been at the location longer than Guthrie’s disappearance. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department released a statement indicating deputies responded to a report of the remains found in a desert near West Ajo Way and South La Cholla Boulevard. They confirmed the remains had been there for an extended period.
Despite the attention due to the Guthrie case, such discoveries aren’t uncommon in southern Arizona. The Pima County Medical Examiner’s Office handles approximately 4,500 death investigations annually. The county leads the nation in storing skeletal remains as part of its Indigent Interment Program, which seeks to connect these remains to next of kin.
Chief Medical Examiner Greg Hess noted that Pima County keeps up to 600 sets of skeletal remains. This is higher than in other counties, partly due to unidentified migrants who die in the Sonoran Desert’s harsh conditions.
“We have more unidentified remains than other places, because of just the nature of the environment,” Hess said. “It’s really hot and dry and people die outside, and their remains are not protected from the environment. They’ll decompose and become skeletal remains relatively quickly.”
The discovery near Guthrie’s home drew attention online, as missing persons cases often intensify interest in routine findings.
Nancy Guthrie, 84, mother of Today co-host Savannah Guthrie, vanished from her Tucson home on February 1. Authorities believe she may have been taken against her will. No suspects have been arrested regarding her disappearance.
This story is ongoing, and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
