An 81-year-old man confessed in a German court to sexually assaulting and killing an American tourist over 30 years ago. The man admitted to the crime during the opening of his trial, as reported by the German news agency dpa. His trial commenced in the Koblenz district court on Tuesday.
The defendant acknowledged killing 24-year-old Amy Lopez in the city of Koblenz back in 1994. He was accused by prosecutors of committing the murder in a “treacherous manner” driven by “base motives” for sexual gratification.
Volker Klein, the man’s defense lawyer, stated that his client fully confessed to the crime. When questioned by presiding judge Rupert Stehlin, the defendant confirmed his admission. The fatal incident occurred on September 26, 1994, when Lopez was a tourist in Koblenz.
The prosecution alleges the man, then 49, lured Lopez under false pretenses to a secluded area in the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. There, he allegedly handcuffed, sexually assaulted, and killed her, inflicting nine knife wounds to her chest.
The Koblenz Public Prosecutor’s Office highlighted that Lopez was also strangled, struck with a stone, and suffered multiple stab wounds. Her partially unclothed body was discovered by children and showed severe head injuries.
This case remained unresolved for years until new forensic methods analyzing old DNA led to a breakthrough. Police examined Lopez’s clothing along with around 1,600 samples. In 2024, upon discovering a male DNA trace, authorities offered a 2,500 euro reward for information, hoping to identify the suspect.
The case gained additional attention after being featured on “Aktenzeichen XY,” a true crime TV show, prompting more tips. The suspect was arrested in February at a nursing home in the Koblenz area and has been in custody since.
The trial is scheduled for eight days, with a verdict anticipated in September. During a recess, defense attorney Volker Klein made statements at the court. This case highlights the role of advanced DNA technologies in solving long-standing crimes.
