Alaska’s Open Governor’s Race Sees 17 Candidates Competing
On Tuesday, Alaska voters face a unique challenge as they navigate an open primary with 17 candidates vying for the governor’s seat. This marks the state’s first genuinely open gubernatorial race in more than 20 years. Governor Mike Dunleavy, a Republican, cannot seek re-election due to term limits.
Alaska’s primary system stands out. It places all candidates on a single ballot, irrespective of their political party. From this expansive field, the top four candidates will move ahead to the general election. This approach allows for a competitive selection process and a diverse range of candidates to reach the voters.
Among the notable contenders is former Anchorage mayor Dave Bronson, a Republican, who was photographed in 2021. His participation highlights the race’s competitive nature and varying political backgrounds of the candidates.
