The Auburn Tigers have introduced a new addition to their roster who is garnering attention due to his size. Tray Taylor, formerly of the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers and Troy Trojans, is now a Tiger, as confirmed by video shared by Jeff Shearer, a senior writer for AuburnTigers.com.
Taylor’s height and weight are a point of discussion. Sports Reference lists him at 5-foot-8 and 160 pounds, while Auburn’s measurements report him as 5-foot-6 and 150 pounds. These figures seem more accurate when compared to videos from the fall camp.
Fans quickly highlighted his stature on social media, making light-hearted comments. One user, @WilliiamHBonney, remarked, “Thought this was a coach’s son practicing for fun.” Another, @tracey_lynnee, humorously added, “Mighty mouse!”
Despite questions about his physicality, Taylor has the potential to influence the Tigers positively. During his time at Troy last year, he made 30 receptions for nearly 500 yards and scored three touchdowns. He also had ten rushes for 52 yards and a touchdown. His versatility extends to returning kicks and punts, particularly during his stint at Coastal Carolina.
His journey includes a standout performance at Tyler Junior College, where he was named a second team JUCO All-American in 2023. He caught 39 passes for 850 yards and recorded nine touchdowns, as mentioned by Peter Rauterkus of AL.com.
Taylor’s arrival at Auburn fills a significant void after wide receiver Duke Smith’s dismissal from the team in June for reportedly breaking team rules. The team is in transition, aiming to redefine its identity under new coach Alex Golesh.
Rauterkus noted, “If nothing else, Taylor gives the Tigers better numbers in practice, but was a contributor for Troy last year.” The Tigers are in need of players to step up, given the transfer of key player Cam Coleman to the Texas Longhorns during the offseason.
Competition for positions is fierce within a prominent program like Auburn. Yet, Taylor’s history shows that he can deliver results for his team. Now, he stands ready to contribute at the top level of college football, advancing from junior college and potentially concluding a compelling college career.
