Dallas Wings guard Azzi Fudd will undergo season-ending arthroscopic surgery on her right knee. This decision follows a five-game absence due to ongoing knee soreness. Fudd, this year’s top overall draft pick, hasn’t played since she was sidelined by the injury.
The team announced on Wednesday that the procedure will occur next week in Connecticut. This is where Fudd gained fame playing for UConn before being chosen as the second consecutive No. 1 pick by the Wings. Last year, Paige Bueckers, crowned WNBA Rookie of the Year, also joined Dallas as the top draft selection.
Fudd began her rookie season coming off the bench. After showing remarkable performance with 24 points in her sixth game, she earned a starting position. She recorded a season-high 26 points in a June victory over Seattle. Despite averaging 13.1 points across 30 games, Fudd’s knee soreness persisted, as seen when she participated in pre-game warmups but was held out during a game against Golden State on August 7.
Both Fudd and Bueckers were instrumental in securing the 2025 national championship at UConn. The Wings, now 3-8 post a six-game winning streak—their longest since relocating to Texas a decade ago—still aim to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2023. Their next challenge is facing Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever, at the home venue of the Dallas Mavericks, on Thursday night.
