The Republican National Committee issued a warning regarding the Democratic Socialists of America’s tribute to Fidel Castro, suggesting it could harm Democrats in the upcoming November elections. The group praised the late Cuban dictator and demanded the prosecution of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio for the Trump administration’s actions towards Cuba.
Natalie Baldassarre, the national press secretary, stated that the embrace of socialist policies similar to those seen in Venezuela, Cuba, and China might lead to significant political consequences for Democrats. She mentioned food shortages and lack of freedoms as outcomes of these ideologies.
Rubio, whose parents are Cuban immigrants, criticized Castro’s legacy last Thursday. He described Castro as having failed in all areas except for destroying Cuba and causing suffering to its people. He advised against following Castro’s example to avoid similar failure.
The Democratic Socialists of America praised Castro as a symbol of resistance and self-determination in the Global South.
The organization’s statement referred to Castro as an organizer and fighter who continues to represent the anti-imperialist struggle.
The DSA accused U.S. policies of hindering Cuba’s access to essential resources and attributed these actions to genocide under Rubio’s leadership. They called for normalized relations and Rubio’s prosecution for alleged crimes against humanity.
White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly responded by rejecting DSA’s claims, attributing Cuba’s challenges to its communist government. She expressed openness to improving relations with Havana, stating that only the Cuban regime’s self-serving interests hinder progress.
In June, Rubio intensified pressure on Cuba by identifying entities linked to Havana, particularly those associated with the military-led conglomerate GAESA. This followed a May order that permitted sanctions on individuals responsible for repression in Cuba.
A State Department report highlighted Cuba as the “capital of 21st century communism” and mentioned DSA as a supporter of pro-Cuba activism in the U.S. The DSA dismissed these claims, asserting its independence from the Cuban government.
Fidel Castro passed away in 2016 at 90, a decade after transferring power to his brother Raúl due to illness.
