President Donald Trump issued warnings of economic repercussions for any country offering support to Iran. This comes as the U.S. seeks to resolve an ongoing conflict with Iran, which began alongside Israel six months ago. The conflict has resulted in thousands of deaths and involved Gulf nations, impacting global markets. Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil shipment channel, has been a focal point.
The U.S. and Iran attempted two ceasefire agreements in April and June to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. However, both agreements quickly collapsed despite Israel’s reduced involvement in the fighting.
On social media, Trump promised “Economic Warfare and Isolation” but provided few details. Iran has endured severe economic sanctions since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
“ANY country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences,” Trump wrote.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed Trump’s statements as a diversion from U.S. financial challenges like record debt and rising interest rates. Araghchi noted that Washington’s policies could lead to further failures and alienate Iranians.
“America’s economic terrorism threatens the global economy and the national sovereignty of countries around the world,” Araghchi said on X.
Trump’s threats often remain unfulfilled, and he did not outline specific actions against countries aiding Iran. The United Arab Emirates, hosting a major U.S. military base, suspended trade and financial activities with Iran. This followed claims of missiles launched from Iran, a report Iran denied.
China, purchasing over 80% of Iran’s oil, poses a challenge for the U.S., which risks retaliation if economic warfare disrupts trade, particularly in rare earth minerals. Iran expressed willingness for dialogue with the U.S., distinguishing negotiation from surrender, according to advisor Mohammad Mokhber.
Despite Trump’s claim of no ongoing talks, Jared Kushner, Trump’s envoy, mentioned robust discussions. Trump aims to seize Iran’s enriched uranium stockpiles and negotiate a new agreement on its nuclear programs, following his withdrawal from a previous deal in 2018. Iran, under the non-proliferation treaty, maintains its nuclear ambitions are peaceful.
