The United Kingdom has introduced new guidelines for asylum seekers, highlighting the nation’s laws on sexual consent, gender equality, and domestic abuse. This nine-page document instructs those residing in the UK to avoid behaviors such as whistling, making kissing sounds at others, making sexual comments, or following someone in public.
A section of the document emphasizes that equal rights for men and women are crucial to British culture. It states that women have the freedom to travel independently, attend educational institutions, choose marriage partners, and earn money without needing permission from a male relative.
The document reads, “Women do not need permission from a husband, father, brother or any other man to do any of these things.”
The UK Home Office stated the guidelines aim to help asylum seekers understand societal expectations, especially when these customs differ from their countries of origin. However, the guidelines received criticism from the far-right, anti-immigration Reform Party, labeling them a “disgrace.”
Chris Philp, Shadow Home Secretary for the opposition Conservative Party, commented, “Instead of trying to train these mainly young, male illegal immigrants to behave in a civilized way towards women, they should be deported.”
Asylum seekers have fled their home nations seeking safety and protection from another government. During the asylum application process, they face restrictions, including the inability to work.
Anti-immigrant sentiment is rising in Europe, bolstering support for far-right populist parties such as the UK’s Reform, France’s National Rally, and Germany’s Alternative for Germany. Centrist parties have often toughened their immigration stance to recapture voters amid increasing migration, driven by conflicts in Africa and the Middle East.
The UK saw 93,525 asylum claims in the year leading up to March 2026, a 12 percent decline from the previous year, according to Home Office data released last month. A Home Office spokesperson noted, “Returns of failed asylum seekers have reached their highest level since 2010 under this government.”
