In a recent podcast, former First Lady Jill Biden shared her thoughts on a concerning moment during her husband, former President Joe Biden’s, 2024 debate with Donald Trump. During the discussion, she was asked about the possibility of Joe Biden experiencing a stroke that night.
Podcast host Jamie Kern Lima inquired if doctors had ruled out a stroke. Jill Biden explained that while she didn’t explicitly ask if Joe had a stroke, she wanted confirmation that he was okay. ‘I was reflecting when writing my book and didn’t specifically say, “Did Joe have a stroke?” I just asked, “Is he okay?”‘ she recounted.
Jill Biden also speculated on potential reasons for her husband’s unusual performance. ‘There are various theories. He had been traveling, was tired, and didn’t feel well that day,’ she stated. ‘I wasn’t with him in the days leading up, having been on the road for two weeks.’
When Lima asked about the possibility of someone tampering with his drink, Jill responded, ‘Who knows?’
Jill Biden’s memoir, ‘View from the East Wing,’ includes her perspective on the debate. She mentioned her fear that Joe was having a stroke during the event. ‘I was frightened. I’d never seen Joe like that before or since,’ Jill recalled.
Some Democrats have criticized the memoir tour, viewing it as revisiting a tumultuous period for the party. Andrew Bates, a former Biden spokesperson, questioned the timing of addressing past challenges publicly. Jill Biden responded, inviting Bates to address his concerns directly with her.
Matt Dallek, a political management professor at George Washington University, commented on the situation. ‘Democrats feel they’re focused on the past, with concerns about Trump’s return and Biden’s perceived failures,’ he explained. ‘There’s a mix of affection for the Bidens and discomfort recalling the end of Biden’s presidency.’
The former president plans to release his own memoir detailing his time in office in November, following the midterm elections.
