Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, was admitted to a private hospital in Islamabad for medical care after midnight on Thursday. This transfer followed a Supreme Court order, according to Khan’s political party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
The decision came hours after Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, Parliamentary Affairs Minister, affirmed the government’s intention to comply with the court’s mandate regarding Khan’s medical treatment. Chaudhry hinted that overseas treatment could be considered if the required care was not feasible within a government facility.
The PTI stated Khan was moved from Adiala prison to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad. Details about his stay and potential return to prison remain unconfirmed.
Khan’s family and PTI representatives have been vocal about their request for him to remain in the hospital.
Chaudhry sought clarification from the Supreme Court on whether the medical relief granted to Khan should also be available for other prisoners. His query arose after a three-judge panel mandated Khan’s transfer for a medical assessment by a board, including specialists and one of his personal doctors, Faisal Sultan.
Earlier, Chaudhry emphasized on platform X that the compliance with Supreme Court decisions was unwavering and non-disruptive. Preparations for Khan’s transfer to the hospital were confirmed, with media sources noting his examination had begun.
Government representatives stated that current regulations include provisions for prisoner healthcare within prison facilities, with transfers to government hospitals as needed.
Concerns over Khan’s health emerged strongly in January when his family claimed that he had lost a significant portion of vision in his right eye. The government contested this, later reporting an improvement in his condition.
Khan, a former cricket star, was removed from office following a parliamentary no-confidence vote in April 2022. His imprisonment began in 2023 due to convictions in various cases.
