In the Illinois Democratic primaries, progressive candidates faced significant defeats. Far-left candidates, some supported by “The Squad” and figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, lost to moderates. Joe Concha, a Fox News contributor, observed that candidates like Mayor Daniel Biss and ex-Congresswoman Melissa Bean secured wins in House races 09, 08, and 02.
One notable race involved progressive state senator and assistant majority leader Aisha Wahab defeating Melissa Hernandez, a more moderate public transit executive. This contest highlighted the ongoing struggle within the Democratic Party between its establishment and progressive factions.
Wahab received endorsements from key figures such as California Attorney General Rob Bonta, Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, and labor icon Dolores Huerta. Hernandez, on the other hand, received substantial support from super PACs and local officials. Wahab won 42.8% of the vote in the special primary against Hernandez’s 16.8%.
Despite initial successes in states like New York, Pennsylvania, Colorado, and DC, progressives have recently struggled in the primaries for Michigan’s Senate race and Wisconsin’s gubernatorial race. The Illinois results suggest that the battle between the Democratic Party’s left and center continues.
California operates on a “jungle primary” system, allowing the top two candidates from any party to move forward to the general election. In this case, Wahab and Hernandez, both Democrats, advanced. Their victory effectively excluded Republicans from a district in which Democrats have previously shown strength.
This special election only fills the remaining two months of Eric Swalwell’s term. Wahab and Hernandez are expected to compete once more in November to determine who will secure a full two-year term in Congress.
Though some claim that the influence of socialists in the party is waning, others point to the continued popularity of progressive policies among younger voters.
During the campaign, Hernandez criticized Wahab for alleged ethical issues in Sacramento. Meanwhile, Wahab depicted Hernandez as a recipient of conservative funding, questioning her liberal credentials. Accusations flew regarding campaign finance practices, with Hernandez accusing Wahab of bypassing finance laws and Wahab critiquing Hernandez’s ties to pro-Israel donors.
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict remains a contentious topic within the Democratic Party, underscoring the divide between progressives aiming to minimize support for Israel and those who maintain that alliance.
