Fernando Mendoza, the first overall draft pick in the NFL, faces early challenges as he joins the Las Vegas Raiders. Despite the high expectations, his preseason game against the Houston Texans was a reminder of the hurdles he must overcome.
In his second pass of the game, Mendoza threw an interception. Texans linebacker Wade Woodaz snatched the ball and returned it for an 80-yard touchdown. This marked a difficult moment for Mendoza, highlighting the learning curve he faces as a rookie quarterback.

Mendoza, originally from Miami, appeared upset on the sidelines. His teammates tried to support him, with veteran player Maxx Crosby leading the encouragement. Crosby emphasized that mistakes are part of the game and stressed the importance of resilience.
“Yeah, that’s football, you know? It’s not gonna be perfect, you know? He’s a rookie. You got to go through some ups and downs as part of the game, and it’s how you respond,” Crosby told ESPN’s Laura Rutledge.
Mendoza’s performance contrasted with his debut against the Arizona Cardinals, where he completed 10 of 16 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown, avoiding interceptions. However, his performance against the Texans was less consistent, completing 8 of 15 passes and ending with a passer rating of 42.6.
ESPN analyst Troy Aikman, a former No. 1 overall draft pick himself, commented on Mendoza’s situation. Aikman noted that adjusting to the speed and closeness of NFL defenders is a crucial lesson Mendoza must learn.
“Part of what [Mendoza] will learn as he moves through this game tonight, if he plays next week, and then throughout his rookie season, when he gets on the field, is that the relationship between defender and receiver is a lot tighter than what it was in college,” said Aikman.
Mendoza’s journey in the NFL is just beginning, and he has important lessons to learn about the speed and dynamics of professional football.
