Graham Rahal, a notable driver from Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, will join around two dozen other drivers at the Freedom Grand Prix 250 in Washington, D.C., on Sunday. This race coincides with the United States celebrating its 250th anniversary, adding significance to the event.
Rahal expressed his excitement during the IndyCar Grand Prix Media Preview on Thursday, highlighting the importance of participating in a race in the U.S. capital. He stated, “As an American, this is an iconic moment.” Rahal emphasized the international nature of the sport, noting that open-wheel and IndyCar racing have always embraced a global presence. Racing in D.C., near Capitol Hill, holds special value, alongside representing the country with the red, white, and blue colors on his car.
“To be here, to have the red, white, and blue on the car this weekend, with all friends and military people we’ve worked with over the years, means a lot,” Rahal commented.
As he anticipates the race, Rahal expressed his eagerness to hit the track. “We’re excited. Can’t wait to see the track, because I’ve seen parts, but to participate in the entire course and compete for the trophy,” he shared. He also mentioned the challenge of containing his excitement, indicating that the energy felt internally was perhaps more intense than he let show.
The action will commence on Saturday with the first practice session at 9 a.m. ET, followed by another session at 1 p.m. ET and qualifying at 5 p.m. ET, viewable on FS1 and FS2 respectively. This inaugural two-day NTT IndyCar Series street race will allow drivers to race past National Mall landmarks, enhancing celebrations for America’s milestone anniversary.
Sunday’s activities will include warm-ups at 9 a.m. ET, with the main race starting at 1 p.m. ET. Viewers can catch the warm-up on FS1, while the race will be broadcast on FOX.
