Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens Faces Criticism Over Social Media Response
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens received criticism after a social media interaction with constituent Jonathan Brimer. Brimer had questioned the mayor on voter-approved transit and pedestrian-safety issues. Dickens’ response telling Brimer to “shut up” sparked controversy.
Social Media Exchange
The situation began when Dickens posted a video on Instagram featuring his visit with Nature Gurlz, a group promoting outdoor activities for Black women in Atlanta. Brimer commented by urging the mayor to prioritize transportation projects, including pedestrian improvements on Peachtree St and completing the Beltline rail.
“Have some fun by restoring Peachtree St’s pedestrian-centric design in downtown and by delivering what we voted for with extra sales taxes for MARTA by getting Beltline rail done,” Brimer said.
In response, Dickens told Brimer to “shut up” and respect the city’s Black women residents. This response drew criticism and surprise from Brimer, who stated he did not expect the mayor to react this way.
Fox News Digital reached out to the mayor’s office to clarify if Dickens personally posted the response or if he planned to apologize. The office declined to comment.
Brimer’s Concerns
Brimer clarified that his comments targeted the city’s transportation decisions and not the women featured in the mayor’s video. He expressed his disapproval of the mayor’s treatment of constituents.
The request related to a $4.85 million downtown safety project on Peachtree Street, scheduled between 2027 and 2029, aimed to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety. Brimer’s critique extended beyond individual projects to a lack of coordinated transportation planning in Atlanta.
The Beltline project, funded by a 2016 half-penny sales tax, was criticized for its delayed progress. The Streetcar East Extension was paused at 30% design in 2025 for reassessment of project priorities.
Criticism of DNC Decisions
Mayor Dickens also criticized the Democratic National Committee (DNC) for not selecting Atlanta as a host city for the 2028 convention. He accused the DNC of ignoring the South and Black voters.
The DNC shortlisted Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia as potential host sites. Although all cities presented strong cases, the final decision will be made later this year.
