Tua Tagovailoa’s performance with the Atlanta Falcons is not meeting expectations. This may prompt the team to advance Michael Penix Jr.’s return sooner than anticipated. After the Miami Dolphins released Tagovailoa, the Falcons signed him hoping he would excel in new head coach Kevin Stefanski’s offense. The plan was for Tagovailoa to start the season, allowing Penix to fully recover from an ACL injury.
However, Ian Rapoport of ESPN and NFL Network reports that the starting position is now Penix’s to lose. This shift results from Tagovailoa’s inconsistent displays in training camp and his first preseason game.
“It really seemed that the goal of the entire organization was to have Tua be the starting quarterback right away to start the season,” Rapoport stated. “Let Michael Penix come along slow… just take his time and make sure he’s fully healthy.”
During training camp and the game against the Denver Broncos, Tagovailoa completed only 3-of-5 passes for 22 yards before coach Stefanski switched to Jack Strand and Cooper Rush.
Rapoport further commented, “Tua’s play made that impossible… All of which is to say, this is Michael Penix’s job for the taking.”
The Falcons had hoped Tagovailoa’s fresh start would result in strong competition for the quarterback role. With Penix integrating back into practice and sharing first-team reps, the team expects him to be both confident and healthy for their Week 1 match against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Stefanski remarked, “Everything we do around this building is competing… That’s not the focus for our guys. Our guys are pushing each other by showing up and putting in the work.”
Tagovailoa’s final preseason game against the Dolphins might still offer a chance to improve his standing. Nevertheless, Stefanski has significant decisions to make before the Falcons’ first game on September 13 in Pittsburgh.
