The Covid-19 pandemic remains etched in many minds as a collective trauma. Observing its impact in Berlin, memories of the day German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced the lockdown are still vivid. The ensuing events—home-schooling, mask mandates, PCR tests, empty airports—marked a difficult period, including the passing of friends’ parents alone in hospitals and care homes.
Recent reports of virus outbreaks, hantavirus and Ebola, have raised concerns. These viruses have not prompted a pandemic as Covid did, but they do evoke apprehension. While not an immediate threat, Apoorva Mandavilli, a science and global health reporter, underscores why vigilance remains crucial.
The past month has revived unpleasant reminders of Covid with mysterious deaths aboard a cruise ship and discussions about forced quarantines. Although scientists quickly discerned that the hantavirus outbreak would not become a global pandemic, news of a rapidly escalating Ebola outbreak in central Africa followed. Hundreds of suspected cases and dozens of deaths have been reported.
Neither outbreak is expected to affect the world as the coronavirus did. The hantavirus can lead to severe illness and death, but its contagion level is low, allowing it to dissipate quickly. Ebola, while more alarming, is predicted by the World Health Organization (WHO) to largely remain confined within the Democratic Republic of Congo and its neighboring areas.
Nonetheless, these outbreaks remind us of the inevitability of infectious disease outbreaks. The global community must be prepared to prevent them from turning into pandemics, a pressing issue discussed by health officials worldwide at the recent annual WHO meeting.
