Jon Stewart, the talk show host, expressed doubts about whether shows like his have had a positive or negative influence on the country during a conversation with former First Lady Michelle Obama. Appearing on her ‘IMO’ podcast, Obama questioned Stewart about the impact of young people getting their news from ‘The Daily Show.’ She asked, ‘Do you think comedy helps or hurts the political climate?’
Stewart remarked that late-night shows are becoming outdated, comparing them to relics of a previous era. He noted the influence of social media and the necessity for such shows to adapt to new formats, like long-form podcasts, to maintain relevance.
Stewart reflected on the difference between cultural power and actual political power, acknowledging that shows like his provide a cathartic experience, yet may also serve as an ‘opiate’ for American citizens. He questioned if such shows create a false sense of political involvement compared to the everyday work of activists striving for justice.
Stewart also considered the potential effects of his work, wondering if it contributes positively or has unintended negative consequences. He recognized that while the intentions behind the show are honorable, he cannot definitively claim it has been a societal win, pointing to the presence of ‘bad faith’ content in the media.
Tim Graham, executive editor of the Media Research Center’s NewsBusters division, agreed with Stewart’s self-reflection. He noted concerns about Americans sourcing news from comedy shows, likening it to consuming ultra-processed foods. He warned that relying solely on political comedy may lead to distorted views.
Graham also commented on the recent focus of late-night shows, highlighting their bias against former President Trump. He observed that such shows devoted a significant portion of their political jokes to Trump and the Republicans in 2024, considering it a form of partisan commentary.
