Iran’s Threats to Europe: Reality Check
Iran has issued threats against Bulgaria, raising concerns about its willingness to attack European countries to deter U.S. allies. Bulgaria is a significant trading partner for Iran and is strategically located in Eastern Europe. The country was considered for Iranian retaliation if there was an escalation led by former President Trump.
Recently, U.S. Air Force KC-135 refueling planes, which were stationed in Bulgaria as part of Operation Epic Fury, departed. Following this, Iran warned NATO members allowing their territories to serve as bases for American or Israeli military start points that it could target these locations.
Strategic Analysis
While Iran has made similar threats to countries like the United Kingdom, analysts believe that Tehran may not intend to fully engage NATO countries. According to Alan Eyre, a former U.S. Consulate head in Dubai, provoking European targets might not bring strategic gains for Iran compared to targeting Gulf nations.
David Cattler from the Center for European Policy Analysis noted that an Iranian strike on a NATO ally would escalate tensions and potentially transform Europe into active participants against Tehran. He emphasized that Iran doesn’t need direct attacks; merely threatening countries supporting U.S. operations can undermine allied cohesion.
