As college football grapples with changes in NIL policies and players returning from the NFL to the collegiate level, high school football remains the last truly amateur level of the sport. With the new season starting, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell shared his thoughts on what makes high school football special.
Addressing young athletes, Campbell emphasized the unique bond formed with teammates one grows up with. He remarked, “You never forget your senior year; make the most of your time because you’re not guaranteed another chance to play alongside these friends.” Campbell highlighted the importance of enjoying the game at this level.

Campbell, at 50 years old, praised high school football as a level without nonsense, recalling the familiar smells of freshly cut grass and the thrill of playing games on Thursday through Saturday nights. The victories, sacrifices, and hardships make this period special. He urged players to enjoy it fully.
“The wins, the sacrifice, the hard work, the blood, the sweat, and the tears. It’s a special time. Enjoy it,” Campbell advised.
Campbell also addressed younger players, encouraging them to support senior teammates wholeheartedly. He noted that while younger athletes have future opportunities to play, seniors do not. “You owe it to the seniors because this may be their last chance. Give them everything you’ve got to make it special for them,” Campbell remarked.
The coach concluded his message with a reminder: the experiences of high school football make lasting memories. He emphasized the importance of making the most of the present, as these moments will be cherished forever.
