A federal grand jury has issued a subpoena to Daniel Richman, a longtime friend and advisor to former FBI Director James Comey, as part of a new investigation. This investigation concerns the alleged leaking of classified information to the media, according to multiple law enforcement sources.
The subpoena targets Richman, highlighting that the Justice Department has commenced an inquiry into the dissemination of classified information to the New York Times. This issue was previously investigated during President Donald Trump’s first term but was paused when President Joe Biden took office.
This fresh probe is separate from an ongoing investigation focused on Comey’s alleged threats against Trump. A previous investigation in 2018 saw Richman playing a crucial role, during which he filed a lawsuit claiming prosecutors infringed on his Fourth Amendment rights by confiscating materials from his electronic devices in 2019 and 2020.
Last December, a federal judge in Washington, D.C., ruled in Richman’s favor regarding this lawsuit. Meanwhile, prosecutors had earlier used gathered files to indict Comey for allegedly making false statements and obstructing Congress in relation to his 2020 testimony on anonymous information leaks by FBI officials.
“Threatening the life of the President of the United States is a grave violation of our nation’s laws,” stated acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.
Comey also faces two federal charges in another case related to a social media post considered a threat against Trump. If convicted, he could face up to ten years in prison.
Brooke Taylor, based in Dallas, reports for FOX News Channel. She joined the network in 2024.
