Laurie Buckhout Faces Fine and Suspension for Trading on Her Own Political Race
In a development impacting North Carolina politics, Republican Laurie Buckhout received a fine and suspension from Kalshi. She purchased contracts related to her congressional race. Buckhout, an Army veteran, aims to flip a district currently held by a Democrat.
Prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket have gained popularity for allowing people to trade contracts on various events, including elections. Concerns over ethics arise as politicians occasionally engage in insider trading. On Monday, Kalshi issued a notice revealing Buckhout broke Rule 5.17(z). This disallows anyone influencing an event’s outcome from trading on it.
Buckhout acquired contracts worth under $1,000 in relation to her candidacy. She faces a $2,589.96 fine and a three-year Kalshi suspension. According to the settlement, her compliance breach occurred once her candidacy made her a market option. Buckhout’s cooperation in the investigation led to her accepting the conclusions, penalty, and trading restriction.
“I bet on myself. Literally. It was a dumb mistake, and as soon as I learned there was an issue, I worked to make it right. Safe to say my career as a Kalshi trader was short-lived,”
She expressed in a statement.
Madison Andrus, a Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokesperson, criticized Buckhout for her actions, stating it reflected poorly on her potential as an ethical representative.
Laurie Buckhout Running in a Key Contest
Buckhout competes in North Carolina’s redrawn northeastern district, looking to unseat Democratic Representative Don Davis. The district now leans more Republican, having supported Donald Trump significantly in past elections. Nevertheless, Democrats remain hopeful as they view Davis as a moderate capable of attracting center-right voters.
Despite increased Republican support, for Democrats, the race holds strategic importance. Amid declining approval ratings for Trump, largely due to economic issues and international conflicts, Democrats see opportunities.
While independent polling remains sparse, internal polls suggest a tight contest. A GQR poll for Davis had him leading by 4 points, surveying 500 likely voters in late June 2026. Meanwhile, a poll by the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) showed a tie at 41% each, favoring Republicans on a generic ballot by 4 points.
The Cook Political Report rates this contest as leaning Republican. However, Sabato’s Crystal Ball considers the race a toss-up post-redistricting.
Other Politicians and Trading Controversies
Kalshi has previously suspended several candidates for insider trading. This year, officials banned Democrat Matt Klein from Minnesota, independent Senate candidate Mark Moran from Virginia, and GOP candidate Ezekiel Enriquez from Texas.
Furthermore, former Representative George Santos received a permanent ban and faced a $71,356 fine. This followed a CFTC case linked to his trades on attendance at Trump’s State of the Union address.
Santos reacted to the ban in a social media post, challenging Kalshi’s longevity.
