Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., criticized a small faction within the Democratic leadership, accusing them of being willing to see Michigan Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed lose. In an interview with ‘Politico Playbook,’ Sanders claimed that progressives challenge wealthy interests and the party’s stance on Israel, thus facing increasing scrutiny.
Sanders highlighted resistance from top Democrats and influential donors, suggesting a lack of enthusiasm for El-Sayed. ‘You’re talking about a small number of people at the head of the Democratic Party. You’re talking about the donor class,’ Sanders noted.
Senator Sanders defended El-Sayed amid scrutiny linked to his connections with far-left streamer Hasan Piker, emphasizing El-Sayed’s perceived threat to oligarchic structures and U.S. foreign policies, particularly regarding Israel.

Democratic strategist and former Biden White House chief of staff Yemisi Egbewole countered Sanders’ view, underscoring the party’s goal of securing a Senate majority and highlighting El-Sayed’s need to unify Democrats after narrowly defeating Rep. Haley Stevens in the primary. Egbewole stated, ‘Dems want a majority in the Senate. El-Sayed apologized for his comments about the Temple Isreal attack and hasn’t campaigned with Hasan.’
Republican National Committee national press secretary Natalie Baldassarre opposed Sanders’ defense of El-Sayed, claiming the candidate’s record and associations deemed him unfit for the Senate.
Sanders backed El-Sayed throughout the primary and believes some Democrats perceive candidates like El-Sayed as a threat to wealth inequality and U.S. policy toward Israel. These Democrats reportedly view El-Sayed as jeopardizing the continuation of supporting extremist policies, such as those of Netanyahu’s government.
El-Sayed has attempted to move beyond renewed inquiries regarding Piker, especially after Piker’s remarks about American Jews and Israel, drawing criticism from several Democrats. Despite extensive Democratic disapproval, Sanders dismissed the controversies surrounding Piker.
El-Sayed resisted inquiries about Piker during the Michigan Democratic Party convention, directing focus toward Michigan-specific issues, such as healthcare access and the aftermath of Trump administration policies.

El-Sayed also issued an apology for comments following a terrorist attack on a Michigan synagogue, clarifying his intent was not to hurt but to provide context, albeit untimely.
Recent polls show Republican nominee Mike Rogers leading El-Sayed marginally, though support among Democrats for El-Sayed remains high. Sanders advised El-Sayed to focus on economic issues impacting Michigan’s families, believing this approach would lead to victory.
