Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Her Decision to Freeze Eggs and Views on Parenthood
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has opened up about her aspirations for motherhood after recently announcing her decision to freeze her eggs. The congresswoman expressed the belief that there is never a ‘right time’ to have children, emphasizing the complexity of balancing family life with career responsibilities.
Political Life and Personal Ambitions
During a recent interview, Ocasio-Cortez addressed whether she would have children while serving in office. She highlighted the practical challenges of beginning a family in conjunction with her professional duties and mentioned that major life decisions are part of a broader perspective that extends beyond her political career.
“First of all, one thing that I hear from a lot of parents is that there’s never a right time. Perfect time,” said Ocasio-Cortez.
She discussed childcare costs as a significant factor making it challenging to envision having a baby while working. Despite her privileged position relative to many Americans, she struggled to see how raising a child would be feasible given the expenses of childcare.
Ocasio-Cortez emphasized that discussions regarding her political future often overlook the intentions and priorities that shape a person’s life. Her ambitions reach beyond her political commitments because she aims to experience as much of life as possible.
“I make decisions about my whole life. It’s not ever just in a career context. It’s about how do I fit all of these things,” she explained. “Sometimes that has to do with really aspirational things with work, and sometimes it has to do with really big aspirational things with love and family.”
Views on Relationships and Values
When questioned about dating someone with conservative political views, Ocasio-Cortez remarked that she would probably avoid doing so. She emphasized the importance of value alignment in relationships, suggesting that political differences often reflect broader personal values and compatibility.
“I think a lot of politics sometimes, at least for me, is about values and being aligned,” she said, noting the significance of shared values.
Her comments offer insight into how she approaches personal relationships, amid discussions of family planning and her political career. Although she has not provided a specific timeline for motherhood, the idea remains integral to her life considerations.
Egg Freezing Decision and Reproductive Choices
Following her announcement last month about freezing her eggs, Ocasio-Cortez discussed this choice as a way to regain control over her reproductive decisions. Through social media, she shared the egg freezing process, hoping to educate other women about fertility preservation.
She linked her decision to broader health care concerns, emphasizing the importance of transparency in political discussions, especially about reproductive healthcare challenges faced by working women.
“I think it’s important for us as leaders to have these conversations and share these processes, especially for working women across the country, and normalize them,” she stated.
Ocasio-Cortez has been candid about the financial aspects of the procedure, which are not covered by her health insurance, with costs ranging from approximately $8,000 to $9,000. The congresswoman aims to empower women to compare prices, particularly for medication related to egg freezing.
Egg Freezing Trends in the U.S.
Ocasio-Cortez’s decision underscores a growing trend in the United States, where elective egg freezing has become increasingly common. Data from a 2025 UCLA Health study showed that planned egg-freezing cycles had nearly quadrupled between 2014 and 2021. The average age of women freezing their eggs also decreased during that time.
Despite increased egg freezing, relatively few women have returned to use their frozen eggs. The procedure, formally known as oocyte cryopreservation, involves stimulating the ovaries, retrieving eggs, and freezing them for potential future use. It provides flexibility in family planning but does not guarantee future pregnancies, as fertility is closely tied to age.
For Ocasio-Cortez, this decision appears to offer more options in her future planning rather than set deadlines. While she has not announced when she plans to have children, motherhood remains a consideration amidst her career, relationships, and personal aspirations.
