Ocasio-Cortez Endorses Angie Nixon in Florida Senate Race

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York, has endorsed progressive Democrat Angie Nixon in the Florida Senate race. This endorsement comes as Nixon, a democratic socialist, prepares to compete against Republican Senator Ashley Moody in the upcoming November midterm elections. Ocasio-Cortez is among the most prominent progressive lawmakers in the U.S.

Nixon emerged victorious in the Democratic primary last month. Democrats hope she can help them regain influence in Florida, despite the state’s conservative leaning, which gives Moody an edge. Ocasio-Cortez, considered a potential future presidential candidate, has shown support for left-wing candidates in the midterms to promote her progressive agenda.

“Angie will be an exemplary fighter for the working families of Florida,” Ocasio-Cortez stated in her endorsement on social media. “That’s why I’m proud to endorse her for the U.S. Senate.”

Nixon expressed her gratitude for receiving Ocasio-Cortez’s support, calling her a reminder of the potential when prioritizing citizens’ needs.

Despite Ocasio-Cortez’s support, forecasts by Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball classify the race as favoring Republicans. Recent polling confirms this, with Moody leading Nixon by margins of 8 to 13 points, according to surveys conducted by the University of North Florida and Stetson University.

Nixon identifies as a democratic socialist, a challenging stance in Florida, particularly in Miami-Dade County, which is predominantly Cuban American and traditionally opposes socialism. The political climate in this region has shifted to the right over recent elections, prompting concerns among some Democrats.

Ocasio-Cortez’s Endorsement Record

In 2026, Ocasio-Cortez has been selective with her endorsements. Nearly all candidates she endorsed at the federal level have succeeded in their primaries. Her notable endorsements include Junaid Ahmed, Sam Forstag, Adam Hamawy, and Abdul El-Sayed, among others. These candidates are running in various political landscapes, from solidly Democratic districts to more competitive areas.

Her support extends to local races, with all her endorsed candidates for state assembly seats winning their primaries this year. She also backed New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s candidacy in 2025.

Popularity and Influence

Ocasio-Cortez is popular among Democrats, although her appeal is less broad across the general electorate. Polls from YouGov and The Economist and CNN/SSRS reveal a mixed reception. While a significant majority of Democrats view her favorably, overall favorability among the broader public is lower.

As a key figure in the Democratic Party’s progressive wing, many young and progressive voters support her. Potential presidential ambitions are a topic of speculation, but opinions differ on whether she is the right candidate for 2028.

“My ambition is to change this country,” Ocasio-Cortez remarked. “Presidents come and go. But single-payer healthcare is forever. A living wage is forever.”
