Aubrey Tenney, a mother from Arizona, recalls her daughter Olive as an energetic child who embraced life. Olive, affectionately called Ollie, had a love for water, a friendly disposition towards strangers, and a vibrant personality. Aubrey described Olive as a ‘ray of light,’ noting her calm demeanor as a baby that evolved into a lively spirit as she grew.
On November 1, 2023, Olive passed away unexpectedly at 18 months old. The autopsy did not reveal a clear cause, leaving Aubrey and her family searching for awareness and understanding. Olive had experienced troubling incidents prior to her death, which Aubrey now reflects on with concern.
First Incident: July 4 Episode
During a family holiday in California, Olive appeared unwell while resting in her aunt’s arms. Her lips turned blue, prompting immediate concern from family members. After pouring water on Olive’s head and patting her back, she seemed to recover quickly. Medical professionals suspected dehydration, but the situation lacked clarity.
Back home, Olive’s pediatrician suggested the event could have been a febrile seizure, common among young children when a fever triggers a seizure. However, the experts were unsure of the exact cause.
Second Incident: September 2 Seizure
During a family outing, Olive had another alarming episode. While secured in her car seat, Olive started seizing, causing Aubrey to immediately pull over and call for help. Olive was transported to the hospital, where a minor fever was detected. Despite the seizure, doctors assured Aubrey that febrile seizures were typical and advised careful monitoring.
These incidents led the family to monitor Olive’s health closely but did not result in further neurological testing.
Olive’s Passing and SUDC Awareness
On the night of Olive’s passing, Aubrey received a call from her husband David, who discovered Olive not breathing. Despite efforts by medical personnel, Olive could not be revived. Aubrey and David eventually learned about Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC), a condition resulting in unexpected child deaths without a clear cause.
Research, such as a study published in January 2024 by NYU Grossman School of Medicine, indicates potential links between SUDC and febrile seizures, although not all children who experience such seizures face complications.
Now actively sharing Olive’s story on TikTok, Aubrey strives to raise awareness about SUDC. She emphasizes the importance of informing others rather than fostering fear. Olive’s memory endures through family traditions, including celebrating her birthday with activities Olive enjoyed, like eating edamame and wearing olive green.
Aubrey maintains Olive’s presence in their lives, symbolized by olive trees and decor. Her surviving children know about their sister, and the family shares Olive’s name frequently, ensuring her spirit remains a part of their daily lives.
