Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed the possibility of reaching a peace agreement to end the conflict in Ukraine. Speaking at an economic forum in Vladivostok, he noted that countries such as the U.S. and China are willing to support a peace settlement. He emphasized that the resolution must ultimately arise from the involved parties, Russia and Ukraine. Putin acknowledged the global efforts aiming to contribute to peace, affirming his belief in the possibility of reaching an agreement.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha indicated optimism regarding peace efforts, suggesting a new dynamic with renewed political and diplomatic engagement worldwide. He encouraged following news updates for further information but refrained from providing additional details.
The conflict, Europe’s deadliest since World War II, rarely sees optimistic assessments from either side. The U.S.-mediated talks last occurred in February, amidst increased air attacks from both Ukraine and Russia and heightened hostilities at sea, affecting global grain prices. Following Putin’s remarks, Chicago wheat futures decreased over 2%.
No specific reasons for anticipated progress in peace talks were cited by either leader. Instead, Putin pointed to Ukrainian actions as obstacles, labeling them as state terrorism due to attacks on civilian merchant ships and reported threats to civilian aircraft.
Putin stated, “Ukrainian attacks on civilian merchant ships and reported threats of attacks on civilian aircraft are acts of state terrorism,” impacting bilateral peace talks.
President Zelenskyy cautioned airlines and insurance companies, asserting Ukrainian drone presence in Russian skies to target military facilities without threatening civilian aircraft. Ukraine requested the U.N.’s aviation agency to ban operations in Russian airspace, as its airspace remains unsafe since Russia’s 2022 invasion.
Putin confirmed ongoing contacts with Ukraine mainly through intelligence channels, although uncertain about their effectiveness. His remarks came amid caution over recent statements from Ukraine’s leadership.
“It is difficult for me to say right now to what extent these contacts are leading to a peace agreement,” stated Putin.
India expressed readiness to assist in resolving the conflict, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasizing the necessity to end the war for humanity’s sake. Modi assured Putin of New Delhi’s support in peace efforts.
