Mayor Mamdani Prepares for 9/11 Memorial in New York City
This year marks Zohran Mamdani’s first 9/11 memorial service as the mayor of New York City. He considers it a great responsibility, ensuring the day focuses on the victims of the attacks, not politics. Mamdani emphasizes the importance of remembering those lost, their families, and honoring the diverse unity that characterizes New York City.
Mamdani wants September 11, 2026, to be a day of reflection, noting that 25 years have passed since the tragic events. He encourages New Yorkers to come together in a shared commitment to remember and honor the courage displayed that day.
As thousands continue to suffer from illnesses related to 9/11, there have been increased demands for the release of attack-related documents. Mamdani supports transparency and plans to allocate $34.2 million in the fiscal year 2027 city budget to create an online portal for accessing these documents. This initiative aims to address public curiosity about unanswered questions by making information accessible and searchable.
The 2001 attacks highlighted communication issues within emergency services. Mamdani stresses the importance of equipping emergency personnel with the best resources. He calls for coordination across federal, state, and local levels to ensure first responders have the necessary tools to face dangers effectively.
Post-9/11, a counter-terrorism program was initiated under then-NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly, involving informants in places like mosques. When asked if he’d support expanded surveillance, Mamdani expresses a commitment to public safety while respecting civil rights. He acknowledges past mistakes and highlights the NYPD’s current approach, which balances safety with respecting individual freedoms.
New York City remains a prime terror target. In case of a credible threat, Mamdani would collaborate closely with the police commissioner and senior officials to assess and mitigate the risk, prioritizing the safety of New Yorkers.
