Republican strategist Katie Zacharia believes Democratic establishment leaders are losing influence to radical figures ahead of the 2026 midterms. This sentiment surrounds the Michigan Senate nominee, Abdul El-Sayed, and his association with streamer Hasan Piker.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez expressed confusion over the attention given to Piker, questioning why elected officials focus on a streamer targeting young people. Similarly, Rep. Pramila Jayapal emphasized the need to engage Piker’s audience without necessarily endorsing all his opinions. She noted the importance for Democrats to appeal to the streamer’s followers.
Contrasting opinions exist within the Democratic Party. Some, like Rep. Josh Gottheimer, criticize Piker and urge others to distance from his controversial views. Yet El-Sayed aims to connect with Piker’s audience, seeking to involve them in electoral movements aligned with shared objectives.
According to Fox News Digital, El-Sayed has distanced his campaign from Piker after backlash over the streamer’s comments regarding American Jews and Israel. Democratic strategist Kaivan Schroff criticized El-Sayed for failing to firmly separate from Piker, suggesting that such associations are more damaging than beneficial, as polling indicates most Democrats disapprove of Piker.
Piker has supported El-Sayed in numerous campaign events. Schroff highlighted the inconsistency in Democrats calling out others while seeking Piker’s support. This selective disavowal raises questions about strategic alliances.
RNC Spokesman Max Lippel criticized the association of figures like Ocasio-Cortez, Sanders, and El-Sayed with Piker, due to his divisive views. He suggested that they should have anticipated the backlash associated with Piker’s extremist opinions.
