The Ordeal of Hannah Pettey: A Case of Survival and Justice
In January 2022, Hannah Pettey experienced severe, relentless pain for six months. Her condition made it difficult to care for her children, Lincoln and Gracie. Her husband, Brian Mann, supported her during this challenging time but as a chiropractor, he couldn’t diagnose the problem.
On January 18, 2022, Hannah’s mother, Nicole Pettey, became concerned after their phone call. Nicole rushed Hannah to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) hospital, where doctors discovered Hannah was starving. A terrifying seizure followed, revealing her severe condition.
Doctors identified the cause of her symptoms as extremely high levels of lead in her body. They believed the lead accumulation was no accident and suggested it was an attempted murder. Suspicion initially fell on Nicole, but she was cleared after demonstrating genuine concern for Hannah.
Brian remained a suspect, despite the lack of direct evidence. The police found no tainted supplements or capsules. However, they discovered Brian had taken out life insurance policies on Hannah, which prosecutors argued provided a motive for attempted murder.
Contractor Danny Hill’s information about leftover lead from Brian’s chiropractic office prompted further investigation. This lead was thought to match the type used in capsules found in Hannah’s possession.
The trial began in June 2025. Hannah testified about receiving nightly supplements from Brian, which she believed contained lead. Despite lacking direct evidence of lead-filled capsules, the jury convicted Brian of attempted murder.
Hannah, once feared to have severe brain damage, has since recovered significantly. She graduated with a teaching degree and works as a teacher. Living with her children, she focuses on rebuilding her life. Brian was sentenced to life in prison, but the couple remains married, with divorce proceedings upcoming.
