Lieutenant Dakota Black, known among her colleagues at the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office as a formidable figure, excels in tracking and detective work. Her specialty is locating missing persons, alive or deceased. She often partners with Deputy Haven, a therapy dog offering comfort to those affected by tragedy.
The Disappearance of Makayla Meave
On Friday, September 15, 2023, Andria Meave received her usual morning call from her sister, Makayla. The next morning, Andria was startled by a call from Makayla’s husband, Frank Byers, who reported Makayla had not returned home after going on a date with a man in a white truck.
Byers, despite living separately on their shared property in Macomb, Oklahoma, with Makayla due to an impending divorce, reported her missing to the sheriff’s office. Deputy Dustin Richardson investigated, finding suspicious details, including a locked shed Makayla was staying in and inconsistencies in Byers’ story.
Community and Law Enforcement Efforts
Despite Byers not participating, friends and family initiated searches for Makayla. Lt. Dakota Black and Detective Marcus May issued an alert and gathered tips amid widespread efforts to locate Makayla. Her connection to the community and her love for children fueled these efforts, highlighting her impact as a beloved teacher and family member.
The Investigation Deepens
Three days into the search, Byers was interviewed again but provided little insight. Simultaneously, Barbara Harper, Makayla’s mother, followed her intuition and sought Makayla in local culverts. This led to a devastating discovery when a search team found Makayla’s body in a drainage pipe.
Assembling the Evidence
Detectives gathered evidence against Byers, including photographic evidence from his phone and discrepancies in his stories. They examined tire tracks and household items that tied him to the crime scene, including bleach and cleaning supplies suspected for crime scene cleanup.
After analyzing additional evidence, authorities confirmed Frank Byers’ involvement and arrested him. In exchange for avoiding the death penalty, Byers accepted a plea deal, receiving life imprisonment without parole.
A Painful Conclusion and a Legacy of Love
Makayla’s family remains disappointed with the plea deal, believing Byers had assistance in the crime. Despite this, they aim to move forward by preserving Makayla’s legacy through the ‘Makayla’s Purple Butterfly’ foundation, dedicated to fighting domestic violence.
Lt. Dakota Black continues her work with a renewed determination to solve cases and support victims, ensuring that Makayla’s story contributes to a meaningful cause and prevention efforts.
