This summer, Democratic party members made fundraising visits to Nantucket, Massachusetts. The affluent island remains a key spot for political fundraising, especially as candidates and party leaders build financial resources for the upcoming November elections.
Democrats traditionally gather on Nantucket and nearby Martha’s Vineyard, which have served as hubs for political donations. As of June 30, the Democratic National Committee, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee held a combined $136 million. Their Republican counterparts possessed roughly $277 million, according to federal records.
Recent visitors to Nantucket for fundraising events include House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., and Texas Senate candidate James Talarico. Also present was Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass. Similarly, Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., attended an August 29 fundraiser organized by Elizabeth Frawley Bagley, a U.S. ambassador to Brazil.
Martha’s Vineyard also hosted fundraising events. On August 31, former President Barack Obama attended an event with former Attorney General Eric Holder. The event supported the National Democratic Redistricting Committee. Wes Moore, a potential 2028 presidential candidate, was on the island on August 8 for a fundraising event with DNC Chair Ken Martin.
Criticism arose from the Maryland GOP, stating, “Where was Wes Moore last weekend? Not campaigning in Maryland or solving our problems in Annapolis, but speaking at a national Democrat event in Martha’s Vineyard.” The statement argued for Dan Cox for governor to prioritize Maryland.
Josh Turek, Iowa state representative and Democratic nominee for the Senate, also visited Nantucket. Known donors Frank Herron and Sandra Urie hosted a fundraising brunch for Rep. Moulton there on August 2.
Michelle Obama visited Nantucket on August 23 for events promoting her book, “The Look.” Joe Biden and his family have frequently spent Thanksgiving on the island. Jill Biden was also seen there in July to promote her memoir.
Republicans have utilized the area for fundraising too. In 2022, Vice President JD Vance, along with senators Rick Scott, Ted Budd, Dr. Mehmet Oz, and Herschel Walker, visited Nantucket to engage with donors.
The National Democratic Redistricting Committee is concentrating on key states such as Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, and others.
