The first full Saturday of college football brought back excitement, but not without some disappointments in predictions. Despite delivering three underperforming picks, anticipation builds with more games to enjoy. This marks the last weekend free from the NFL for a while, with intriguing matchups on the horizon.
Louisville vs Ole Miss
This matchup stands as the highlight of the weekend, featuring the only duel between two ranked teams. Louisville aims to build on last year’s 9-4 season, which concluded with a win over Toledo in the Bush’s Boca Raton Bowl. Offensively, the Cardinals have introduced eight new transfers to their starting lineup. This signifies either a potential influx of fresh talent or potential inconsistency due to new players replacing those who departed. The defense sees five incoming transfers as well.
For Ole Miss, continuity from last year is key. Lane Kiffin’s departure to LSU has left Pete Golding in charge. Adapting swiftly to these changes is crucial. The Rebels added players via the transfer portal, yet Trinidad Chambliss provides stability as a returning quarterback. While offensively only three are new transfers, their defensive lineup returns just four starters, signaling potential initial challenges.
Expect an engaging game as Louisville’s fresh offense confronts Ole Miss’s revamped defense. Conversely, Chambliss faces a seasoned defense. With Chambliss adjusting to a new coach, a low-scoring game seems likely. The expectation is under 55.5 points.
Wisconsin vs Notre Dame
This game may not be as closely contested but remains significant. Wisconsin, no longer a powerhouse, holds considerable talent despite a challenging 4-8 record last season. Their offense now includes five transfers, featuring new faces at quarterback, running back, and two positions on the offensive line.
In contrast, Notre Dame ranks among the top teams nationally, benefiting from a non-conference schedule allowing flexibility in choosing opponents. Returning quarterback CJ Carr leads them after last year’s 10-2 performance. This season looks promising, with Miami as their most challenging opponent, a home game for Notre Dame. Aneyas Williams steps up in the backfield, following a respectable previous season.
Despite Notre Dame’s home designation, the game at Lambeau Field in Wisconsin could favor the Badgers. Under Coach Marcus Freeman, Notre Dame holds a 3-5 record in early-season games, suffering defeats in two of Freeman’s four opening games. Backing Wisconsin +20.5 seems a viable option.
