New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is under criticism for giving a ceremonial pen from a 9/11 remembrance ceremony to his chief counsel, Ramzi Kassem. Kassem previously represented Ahmed al-Darbi, a convicted al Qaeda member, whose brother-in-law was involved in the 9/11 attacks. This act has raised concerns among many, with some seeing it as disrespectful to the victims and first responders of the attacks.
Ceremony and Criticism
Mamdani signed executive orders ahead of the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. These orders designated the day as one of citywide remembrance and service, while also reinforcing efforts to prevent future terrorist threats. After signing, Mamdani asked NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch to hand the ceremonial pen to Kassem. This gesture attracted backlash on social media platforms.
“This is a slap in the face to victims ahead of the 25th anniversary of 9/11,” wrote podcast host Benny Johnson.
“A deliberate gesture that undermines 9/11 yet again,” commented another user.
Critics argue the focus shifted from honoring those affected by the attacks to Kassem’s history of representing contentious figures. Former New York state Senate candidate Maria Danzilo expressed her frustration with Mamdani and the timing of his actions.
Controversial Past
Kassem’s attendance at the ceremony was defended by City Hall, noting that he and his team developed the executive orders. However, Kassem’s previous work representing al-Darbi at Guantánamo Bay and his role in founding a CUNY legal clinic for Muslims has been under scrutiny.
Ahmed al-Darbi pleaded guilty to war-crime charges related to al Qaeda maritime plots. His familial connection to a 9/11 hijacker has only intensified criticism. Kassem also represented Mahmoud Khalil, involved in pro-Palestinian activities at Columbia University and detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Mayor Mamdani’s office has not provided any additional comments regarding the controversy.
