Democratic congressional candidate Cait Conley, a 16-year Army combat veteran, is challenging Republican Rep. Mike Lawler in New York’s 17th Congressional District. During an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Conley expressed her support for impeaching War Secretary Pete Hegseth. She accused him of compromising U.S. national security.
Anchor Dana Bash questioned Conley about her stance. If elected, would Conley support Hegseth’s removal? Conley affirmed, stating he is a threat to national security and disrespects service members. She emphasized her commitment to impeaching him.
Conley’s strong words came after the House Democrats introduced six impeachment articles against Hegseth. They cited his handling of the Iran war, use of Signal for military discussions, and other issues. Hegseth’s leadership at the Pentagon faced renewed criticism.
Lawler’s campaign manager, Ciro Riccardi, responded to Conley’s statements. He criticized her association with progressive figures and her impeachment stance. Riccardi argued that this position reveals her extreme views.
Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson dismissed the impeachment effort. Wilson noted the department’s success in achieving objectives in Iran. He described the push for impeachment as a distraction from the Department’s achievements.
Hegseth himself has refuted past criticisms of his leadership. Responding to calls for his removal due to his use of Signal, he accused the media of spreading rumors fueled by disgruntled employees.
More recently, criticism of Hegseth has come from both sides of the aisle. Republican Sen. Thom Tillis urged President Donald Trump to replace him. Tillis wants a leader who empowers military talent rather than diminishes it.
The White House, however, stood by Hegseth. A statement from spokeswoman Anna Kelly affirmed President Trump’s confidence in Hegseth’s leadership at the Pentagon.
Former Army Secretary Dan Driscoll raised concerns about Hegseth. Driscoll reported issues with Hegseth blocking transformation efforts. Despite this, Driscoll publicly praised Hegseth’s support for the Army’s progress.
Fox News Digital sought comments from Hegseth, the White House, and Conley, but did not receive immediate responses.
