Hunter Mahan stepped away from the PGA Tour in 2021, citing burnout from the relentless pressure of professional golf. Over the last five years, Mahan has embraced a quieter life at home, spending time with his family and coaching high school golf. Recently, he felt the urge to play again, but in a different way.
Mahan, who has won six titles on the PGA Tour, ventured into the golf content world in June. He has been sharing videos documenting his journey back into the sport, along with instructional content, on social media platforms including Instagram, where he has gained over 55,000 followers.
“My wife took some videos and said, ‘You should start playing more, I can tell you’re interested,'” Mahan recounted in an interview with OutKick. “I went to the course the next day, recorded a video, and talked about my thoughts on returning. The response was surprisingly positive, and it was quite overwhelming,” he said.

In addition to his content creation, Mahan expressed interest in potentially competing on the PGA Tour Champions. He’s looking ahead and considering this option, which will be available when he turns 50 in a little over five years. The idea of rejoining the competitive scene is appealing to him, especially with many of his friends approaching the same age.
“I’m exploring my options and trying to understand my place in golf today,” Mahan said. “I have over five years until I can enter the senior tour, the Champions Tour. It could be fun because many of my friends will be joining around the same time,” Mahan mentioned.

While figuring out his next steps, Mahan has had numerous conversations about finding the best medium for sharing golf content. He has enjoyed the positive reception from both professional and amateur golfing communities. “It’s cool to see how people respond and engage with the content. It’s been a lot of fun,” he expressed.

Mahan’s history on the PGA Tour includes being ranked in the Top Five of the Official World Golf Ranking in 2012. With six PGA Tour victories, he will have immediate eligibility to compete on the PGA Tour Champions when he turns 50. Mahan first tasted victory at the Travelers Championship in 2007 and achieved his last win at The Barclays seven years later.
