Students at Georgetown University are planning a controversial event on the anniversary of Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Screenshots shared by the university’s Turning Point USA (TPUSA) chapter reveal plans for a ‘Charlie Kirk lookalike contest.’ The announcement on Fizz, a social media app popular among students, gained over 2,200 upvotes. Georgetown’s student body numbers around 6,000.
The lookalike contest announcement encourages participants to ‘pull up to Copley Lawn to speak the truth while the cost is high.’ Copley Lawn is a notable location on campus, near the iconic Healy Hall. The TPUSA chapter interprets the slogan as a mockery.
Georgetown’s TPUSA chapter finds the contest disturbing and plans to counter it with a presence on campus. They set up tables with American flags, stickers, and signs opposing the event.
In another Fizz discussion, a separate lookalike contest for Erika Kirk was mentioned. Some speculate the winners might be paired as prom king and queen. Details on the origins of these calls are unclear, but Fizz is known as a widely-used anonymous platform among Georgetown students. Users must have a Georgetown email to access it.
One Fizz user suggested that The Georgetown Chimes, a school choral group, should sing a Charlie Kirk meme song, ‘We Are Charlie Kirk.’ The song is rumored to be AI-generated and emerged shortly after Kirk’s murder.
On the Fizz account, another post celebrating the ‘Kirkiversary’ with an AI-generated image of Charlie Kirk was noted. It included several phrases meant as a tribute.
TPUSA’s Heidi Sui expressed concern over the event’s popularity, citing the importance of maintaining respectful discourse. Sui emphasized that Georgetown should be a place for debating differing beliefs without resorting to celebrating a tragedy.
In response, a Georgetown University spokesperson stated there’s no known activity related to such an event on campus. The university disapproves of the language in the anonymous posts and monitors the situation to ensure community safety.
Georgetown reaffirms its commitment to fostering a respectful and safe learning environment. The institution’s policies support free expression but discourage making light of violence. Students are reminded of campus conduct guidelines.
