Clemson, led by coach Dabo Swinney, was expected to perform better this season after a 7-6 finish last year. The team still boasts one of the top wide receiver duos in college football with T.J. Moore and Bryant Wesco Jr. They revamped their roster by acquiring elite transfers such as Chris Johnson Jr., Elliot Washington II, and London Merritt, alongside ranking 20th in recruiting class. Yet, these changes did not suffice to bridge the gap against LSU last Saturday night.
LSU’s Commanding Victory
In Lane Kiffin’s inaugural game as LSU’s head coach, the team defeated Clemson 51-10, restricting their offense to a mere 145 total yards. This result has intensified the scrutiny on Swinney, following a disappointing previous season.
Clemson’s Potential Cost Savings
There is a financial incentive for Clemson to terminate Swinney’s contract during the 2026 season, as reported by Robby Kalland of CBS Sports. Doing so would save the school $3 million due to a decreasing buyout structure. Currently, the buyout is set at $57 million, rising to $60 million once 2027 begins. This year represents the final period of this declining contract.
Debate Over Swinney’s Future
Despite the turbulence, Swinney is synonymous with Clemson football, having secured two national championships. His accolades include three Paul “Bear” Bryant Awards, nine ACC championships, and an impressive record of 187-54, equating to a .776 winning percentage, one of the highest in college football.
However, the sport remains unforgiving. Persistent losses could make the buyout more likely. Clemson will host Georgia Southern next, followed by a challenging schedule in October including games against UNC, Cal, Miami, Charleston Southern, Virginia Tech, and Florida State.
