The Arcada Theatre in St. Charles commemorated its 100th anniversary with a unique Labor Day weekend event. A parade and appearances by music legend Chubby Checker and actress Priscilla Presley highlighted the celebration.
Since opening on September 6, 1926, the Arcada has hosted silent films, vaudeville acts, and prominent touring shows. This event marks another milestone in its vibrant history.
The day began with a meet-and-greet with Priscilla Presley at Studio 64, followed by a parade through downtown. The parade started near the Fox River at Sixth Street and traveled east to the Arcada’s location at 105 E. Main St.
The evening featured a ‘History of Rock ‘N Roll Concert’ with musicians from the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. Ron Onesti, Arcada’s President and CEO, presented ‘Arcada Theatre Legacy Awards’ to bands with extensive histories at the venue.
The celebration took a year to plan. Onesti aimed to reflect the theater’s history while incorporating a rock-n-roll feel. He wanted more than a parade—something participatory like a street dance.
Chubby Checker, known for ‘The Twist,’ was a fitting guest. Onesti revealed plans to break the Guinness World Record for the biggest ‘Twist’ dance, which requires over 3,000 participants.
Cheryl Szaravajka from Vernon Hills participated too. ‘The Twist’ is timeless and doesn’t demand much skill, making it accessible to all ages.
Laurie Milbourn, a St. Charles native, emphasized the Arcada Theatre’s cultural significance. It’s a cornerstone of the community, attracting numerous visitors.
Both Checker and Presley shared insights inside the theater after the parade. Checker highlighted the historical and future importance of venues like the Arcada. Presley echoed this, emphasizing the role of such venues in uniting people and maintaining cultural traditions.
