Stefany Shaheen, daughter of retiring Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, secured victory in the Democratic primary in New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District. This significant win positions her in a critical race for Democrats hoping to gain control of the House of Representatives. The district’s current representative, Chris Pappas, is pursuing a U.S. Senate seat.
Pappas, who announced his Senate campaign last year, expressed gratitude for his previous support. “I’m honored that the people of New Hampshire have entrusted me to fight for them. I’m proud of what we have accomplished together and I’m going to continue this fight in the U.S. Senate,” he stated in a press release.
Historically, incumbents pose a strong chance for parties in competitive areas. Pappas had last secured his seat by winning 54.0% against Republican Russell Prescott. With him leaving his House seat vacant, a group of Democratic contenders, including Maura Sullivan — a Marine veteran and former Obama administration official — entered the race.
Joining Shaheen and Sullivan were other candidates such as Carleigh Beriont, a union organizer, and Christian Urrutia, an Army National Guard officer. Urrutia later endorsed Shaheen, who quickly emerged as a leading candidate. Shaheen’s campaign priorities include advocating for Medicare for All, enhancing tax breaks for first-time homebuyers, and reforming Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“I’m so proud that Stefany is answering the call to serve the district she was born and raised in,” Sen. Shaheen commented, highlighting her daughter’s roots and dedication to the community.
Maura Sullivan emphasized her commitment to fighting price gouging and strengthening the Veterans Affairs (VA). She opposed past tariffs imposed by Trump and called for more federal funding for housing development. Her experiences as a Marine and in the Obama administration shaped her campaign’s focus.
Having won the primary, Shaheen will compete in the general election on November 3.
