The White House Historical Association, established by Jacqueline Kennedy for preserving the building’s character, opted not to voice criticism over President Donald Trump’s changes to the White House.
Stewart McLaurin, the head of the association, is depicted in 2024 within the replica of the Oval Office at ‘The People’s House’ exhibit. This reflects the association’s dedication to maintaining the historical integrity of the premises.
In October last year, President Trump decided to demolish the East Wing of the White House. This move created a stir among the general public, congressional members, and some within his own administration.
However, the association’s leaders were not caught off guard. They had known about Trump’s intentions since late July. He sought to replace the East Wing with a ballroom. Despite this, the association chose not to contest the president’s plans.
The wider public was only informed of the demolition once the equipment was activated nearly three months later.
