Calls for Federal Investigation
Democratic lawmakers are pushing for a federal inquiry into data practices tied to the nation’s 250th anniversary events. They are concerned that personal information collected from these events might benefit President Donald Trump and his allies in the 2026 midterm elections.
Representatives Jared Huffman and Joe Morelle have asked the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to examine Freedom 250, an organization linked with Trump, for its role in organizing the semiquincentennial celebrations. The push follows a lengthy investigation by Democrats on the House Natural Resources Committee into Freedom 250’s dealings and its connections with America250.
Investigation Focus
Democrats want the GAO to determine if personal data from Freedom 250 events might aid Trump’s political network. In a recent letter, Huffman and Morelle expressed concerns that the organization used taxpayer funds to gather voter information potentially useful for political gain.
They requested the GAO to find out where the data is stored, who controls it, and whether protections exist to stop sharing with Republican organizations or Trump-linked political action committees.
Data Collection Allegations
Huffman and Morelle claim those attending Freedom 250 events submitted personal details like names, emails, and phone numbers. The information was supposedly handled by Brad Parscale’s digital platform Campaign Nucleus. Additional operations were conducted by Dyspatchit and Ace Specialties, raising concerns about data access for these companies.
The lawmakers further allege Freedom 250 asked for consent to send alerts and donation requests linked to Trump-branded fundraisers on WinRed. They seek the GAO’s confirmation on whether safeguards were in place to prevent data misuse.
The lawmakers underline that if this data merges with other voter records, it could become a strategic political resource in the upcoming elections.
Freedom 250’s Privacy Policy
Freedom 250’s privacy policy mentions collecting personal details and potentially sharing them with vendors for specific purposes. The policy states data confidentiality obligations for third-party vendors and describes security measures to guard data.
Though there’s no firm evidence of data misuse, Democrats are asking the GAO to clarify data control and protections.
About Freedom 250
Freedom 250, launched by Trump in December 2025, positioned itself as a national, non-partisan body leading the 250th-anniversary celebrations. It organized key events and aimed to unite Americans around their nation’s past and future.
Keith Krach was appointed CEO, and Democrats have accused Freedom 250 of sidelining America250, while the organization sees such criticism as politically motivated.
Difference Between America250 and Freedom 250
America250 was established by Congress to coordinate semiquincentennial celebrations. It partners with the nonprofit America250 for anniversary programs.
In contrast, Freedom 250 was independently launched by Trump to manage key anniversary events.
Who Is Brad Parscale?
Brad Parscale was the digital director for Trump’s 2016 campaign and managed the 2020 reelection campaign. He founded Campaign Nucleus, used by Republican candidates and committees for voter outreach.
Role of House Natural Resources Committee
The House Natural Resources Committee oversees public lands, energy development, and related areas. Huffman, its ranking Democrat, has led the investigation into Freedom 250, releasing an interim report accusing the organization of misusing federal resources for the semiquincentennial celebrations.
