Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts expressed his admiration for the outgoing head of the Smithsonian Institution, Lonnie Bunch, after he faced criticism from President Donald Trump’s administration. Bunch announced plans to retire following a year of disputes with the White House concerning the portrayal of U.S. history at the Smithsonian.
Roberts, serving as the chancellor of the Smithsonian, praised Bunch for his dedication. He noted Bunch’s pursuit of excellence in narrating the nation’s history and highlighted the benefits of his wisdom, vision, and leadership on the institution.
“At the Smithsonian, our work is driven by scholarship, accuracy and an uncompromising commitment to tell the fullness of America’s story,” Bunch stated in an internal email to staff. He acknowledged room for improvement but argued against the report’s criticism.
Bunch’s resistance followed a report from the administration that criticized the Smithsonian, particularly the National Museum of American History. The report described the institution as influenced by a radical ideology.
Bunch countered these claims, emphasizing the Smithsonian’s dedication to telling America’s story with accuracy and helping the nation find clarity and understanding.
Despite Bunch’s efforts, increasing pressure from the White House led to warnings that the Smithsonian might lose access to federal artifacts and grants if it persisted with its current leadership approach.
Furthermore, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and White House Domestic Policy Council Director Vince Haley sent a letter to Congress. They voiced concerns about ideological influence and potential misconduct within the Smithsonian’s leadership, citing evidence of possible violations of Federal antidiscrimination law.
The situation has created a contentious environment where the Smithsonian faces possible cuts to taxpayer funding, with demands for increased accountability.
