The Chicago White Sox have a history of power hitting, and this season is no exception. The last time the Sox had three players with 30-plus home runs was in 2008. Carlos Quentin, Jermaine Dye, and Jim Thome led the team to the playoffs that year. This year, Munetaka Murakami, Miguel Vargas, and Colson Montgomery have all reached the 30-homer mark, aiming for a similar playoff outcome.
Current Standings
As of Wednesday, the Sox had a two-game lead in the American League Central over the Cleveland Guardians with 18 games remaining. Manager Will Venable highlighted the challenge opposing pitchers face with multiple players capable of changing the score quickly. “When you have three guys with 30 homers, it adds more challenges,” Venable noted.
Miguel Vargas: First to 30
Miguel Vargas was the first to achieve the 30-home run mark for the Sox. His journey began with a grand slam against the Marlins on March 30 in Miami, contributing significantly to a 9-4 victory. He reached his 10th home run on May 15 during a loss to the Cubs and made his 20th homer count with a three-run blast against the Guardians on July 3.
Vargas ended a 12-game home run drought with his 30th on a 3-2 fastball from the Twins’ Zebby Matthews. “It means a lot for me to achieve one of these moments,” Vargas expressed. He has hit four home runs against the Detroit Tigers this season, with four games left against them at Rate Field.
Colson Montgomery’s Path
Colson Montgomery also reached 30 home runs alongside Vargas. His first home run of the season was a grand slam against the Brewers on March 29. Montgomery hit his 10th homer against the Mariners on May 9 and had a notable series against the Yankees with three home runs.
Montgomery hit his 30th against the Twins and described sharing the moment with Vargas as special. He has hit three homers each against the Twins, Yankees, and Guardians.
Munetaka Murakami’s Strength
Munetaka Murakami, a key offseason addition, showcased power early by homering on opening day. He set a franchise record with five consecutive games with home runs, achieving his 10th on April 22 and hitting 20 by May 27, the fastest for a rookie in modern history. Despite a hamstring strain in late May, he reached the 30-home run milestone in September against the Twins.
Murakami focused on avoiding injuries and acknowledged that “results come at the end overall after the season.” He’s homered twice against both the Tigers and Guardians despite limited play.
The contributions from Vargas, Montgomery, and Murakami have boosted the Sox’s total to 189 home runs, second in the AL, and they aim to surpass their 2008 total of 235.
