Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania made an unexpected appearance at the Republican National Midterm Convention in Dallas via video on Wednesday. In a brief 64-second message, he addressed the gathering, highlighting his cooperation with Republican Senator Dave McCormick, whom he praised for getting the job done effectively and considered a friend.
While standing at a well-known industrial site in Pennsylvania wearing his usual black hoodie, Fetterman emphasized the importance of safeguarding steel jobs in the area. He stated, “That’s the iconic U.S. Steel mill and that’s exactly the kind of thing that we’ll work on together. We’ll work with President Trump to fight and defend the steel way of life, right here in the Steel Valley.” This statement marked his closest approach to endorsing Trump during the video.
Throughout the video, Fetterman reaffirmed his Democratic affiliation and expressed his commitment to a sensible approach, stating, “Yes, I’m a Democrat. Why am I here talking to you today? Because, well, I’m a common sense Democrat. I’m always going to stand with America. I’m always going to reject the extremes and socialism and that anti-American way of life.”
Fetterman has increasingly distanced himself from the Democratic Party, as reported by the Wall Street Journal earlier this month. The report suggested Fetterman’s disengagement from senatorial duties, focusing instead on relations with conservative media and support for Israel. The article, based on conversations with former staff and lawmakers, drew Fetterman’s criticism who described it as “lies, half-truths, innuendos, smears and anonymous.”
Fetterman further addressed these allegations, stating that any leaked text messages lacked proper context. He reaffirmed his commitment to delivering for Pennsylvania and added that he would only leave the Democratic Party if it adopts any anti-Israel stance.
Fetterman was elected in 2022 but experienced a stroke during his campaign and faced a public struggle with depression shortly after taking office. A poll by the New York Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, and Siena University revealed that Pennsylvania Republicans view Fetterman more favorably than McCormick, while only 22% of Democrats in Pennsylvania hold a positive view of him.
