As the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks nears, former President George W. Bush shared insights about his decision to visit a mosque shortly after the events. Speaking at an event called ‘A Legacy of Service: America at the 25th Anniversary of 9/11’ in Dallas, Bush emphasized his intention to communicate that Muslim Americans were not to blame for the terrorism.
Bush reflected on his actions with former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during the event at his presidential center. He expressed concern about reports of harassment faced by Muslim women, especially those wearing coverings, in places like Michigan. To address these concerns, Bush visited the Islamic Center of Washington six days after the attacks, asserting that ‘Islam is peace.’
Recalling his past actions, Bush said, ‘It became clear to me that if this was an ideological struggle, we must uphold our ideology of religious freedom.’ Rice asked Bush about the significance of his visit, highlighting efforts to ensure Muslim Americans felt no blame for the attacks.
Bush reiterated his stance that Islam is a religion of peace, and those responsible for the attacks had distorted their faith. During his visit to the Islamic Center, Bush met with Muslim leaders and addressed fears among Muslim women who felt unsafe amidst a climate of intimidation.
He firmly stated that such discrimination ‘should not and will not stand in America.’ Bush’s approach came at a time when security concerns and discrimination fears challenged American values.
As the country marks 25 years since the tragedy, these reflections gain renewed attention in political discussions. Bush’s remarks echo his ongoing commitment to distinguishing Islam from the actions of extremists.
