Alanis Morissette rose to fame with her album Jagged Little Pill, but the success came with significant difficulties. During a conversation on the ‘Call Her Daddy’ podcast, Morissette shared the distressing challenges she faced, which included threats and negative reactions even from peers in the music industry. Some websites went as far as plotting her murder.
Morissette, who gained widespread recognition following her 1995 album, discussed the intense backlash that followed her hit You Oughta Know. She mentioned receiving hostile reactions, including death threats, and resistance from fellow musicians. There was terror and resistance, but that’s just normal,
she recalled.
Morissette revealed that websites once detailed ways to murder her after Jagged Little Pill catapulted her to international fame.
She spoke about the personal attacks she endured, saying, At that point, project onto me all you want. Project that I’m the Antichrist. Project that I’m terrifying or … basically too much. My whole life I’ve just heard that I’m too much.
The criticism extended beyond her artistry, escalating to create a hostile environment around her. Websites emerged that discussed ways to harm her, a chilling manifestation of this hostility.
The singer admitted that the most painful criticism came from fellow artists, including ones she respected. Courtney Love was among those who spoke against her, though she later apologized. Another critic was Sinéad O’Connor, who also apologized after a while.
Morissette compared the situation she faced to that of Taylor Swift, suggesting a pattern of limiting women in the music industry. They were upset. I was, you know, it’s like people being jealous of Taylor Swift,
she explained. She believes the backlash stems from a scarcity mindset that fosters an environment where competition among women is encouraged by a patriarchal society.
Before her rise to global stardom, Morissette had a promising start as a dance-pop singer in Canada and appeared on a Canadian children’s TV series. Jagged Little Pill marked a dramatic shift, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and earning multiple Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.
Morissette’s music career is celebrated, with her induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2026 highlighting her impact.
